StepUp: End Homelessness in Sarasota County Now

Welcome,

Developed over five months of community workshops and listening sessions, research, StepUp: End Homelessness in Sarasota County Now was officially released to the press and public on December 21, 2011, and it now presented for public comment through March 31, 2012. StepUp is presented in sections so you may go directly to an area of interest to review and comment, however, we hope you will take the time to review the entire plan because it is interwoven and builds from beginning to end to set the course forward.

We have used this format for public comments in an effort to maintain the spirit of civil and honest conversations about homelessness and poverty in Sarasota County that was established by more than 600 community members that have participated in the process thus far.  So, take a look and let us know what you think!

And thanks for stepping up!

Outreach, Inc. and its fundoer Eric Howard work with the homeless youth of Indy every day. I know he can help you if you want to get involved. I have his contact information if you need it. Thanks for putting this post on the blog. Most don’t realize how bad things are but they can change if we start NOW.

I am writing this to inform you that Sarasota is, again, creating another situation that may put over another dozen folks on the street. This is in regards to the up coming mooring field. Sarasota will be installing around 31 moorings. Using only about 25 percent of what is allotted. The rest of the area will not be used. We are trying to seek permission to use this area to moor our boats/homes. Many of us have been living out there for over 10 years. We are faced with no wheres to go with our homes/boats. We enjoy livng on our boats as they fit within our fixed incomes and enjoy the peace and quiet that comes with being on our boats. We have been trying to work with the City Council in allowing us use of the unused portion of the mooring field. If this in not allowed than we will be faced with going back on the streets. Please help us in persuading the City Council in allowing us to use the unused space for a safe haven for our homes. I am a disabled Vietnam Vet and need a safe area that provides me affordable place to live. Also the peace and quiet that I find I need in life. I am on a fixed income and can not afford the rates that the City will be charging for a mooring. There is also no place that I can go in the area that provides the safety as the mooring field. I can not and will not go back on the streets again. I believe that the City Council should have some regard in our will being rather than just “throwing” us out. Just a side note, I volunteer in the field of Wildlife Rescue in the county of Sarasota. I do enjoy my volunteering in this field. So I do contribute to my time in a worth while effort in the City I love so much. Thank you for any help you may be able to bring forward in out effort to secure unused anchoring for us. If you would like to contact me for more information my number is 941-228-4475. Sincerely, Michael Laffargue.
